THE BIG COUNTRY is a term that is used daily by the folks in this part of Texas, but you might not find it on a map or in an encyclopedia. The Big Country is the unofficial name given to west central Texas which is comprised of Taylor, Nolan, Calahan, Fisher, Jones, Shackelford, Stonewall, Haskell, Throckmorton, Runnels, Knox, Stephens, Eastland, Brown, Coleman and Coke counties. Abilene, the largest city in the Big Country with a population of 106,000 is known by locals as the Key City. Abilene is home to 3 universities, Abilene Christian University, Hardin-Simmons Univerity, and McMurry University. We also have two 2 year colleges, Cisco Junior College and Texas State Technical College which offer associate degree programs at their Abilene campuses.
The Big Country is proud to be the home of Dyess Air Force Base, located on the western edge of Abilene. No community anywhere is more friendly to its military personel than Abilene, because that is just what Abilene and the rest of the Big Country communities are to Dyess Air Force Base - Friends.
